I was amazed and transfixed when I stumbled on the Summum™ mummification site.  Yes, it is true.  In 2008 you can undergo mummification after death.  The Summum™ organization has developed a modern process which as described, is sensitive and beautiful.  Here’s a description of how the process works as explained on the Summum™ website;

  1. The body of the deceased is transported to a local funeral home where it is prepared for traditional viewing and funeral services.  If no such services were arranged, the body is sent directly to Summum™ in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  2. If the body was sent to a funeral home, following the services, the funeral home prepares the body of the deceased and transports the deceased to Summum™ in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the mummification rites begin.
  3. The rites of Transference begin and are officiated as the body is bathed and cleansed.  An incision is made to remove the internal organs.  The organs are thoroughly cleansed and placed back in the body.  The incision is left open so that the organs receive further treatment.
  4. The body is then immersed in a baptismal font filled with a special preservation solution made up of certain liquids, some of which are chemicals used in genetic engineering.  The body remains submerged for a period of time, long enough to achieve maximum penetration as the rites of Transference continue.
  5. The body is removed from the immersion/baptismal tank, cleansed again, and then covered with a lotion.
  6. Several layers of cotton gauze are wrapped around the body.
  7. A polyurethane membrane is applied over the gauze, forming a permanent seal.  This is followed by a layer of fiberglass and resin.
  8. The mummy is taken within a Pyramid building to continue the rites of Transference.
  9. The body is encased within a bronze or stainless mummiform (more on this later).
  10. The mummiform is filled with an amber resin, completely surrounding the mummy and protecting the perfection that has been created.
  11. The openings in the mummiform are welded closed.
  12. The mummy is enshrined in a mummy Sanctuary or interred in a local cemetery.

Summum™ needs about 120 days to complete the mummification process.  It’s not for everyone but it really is compatible with everyone’s personal religion or philosophy. This is a permanent preservation.  Think about how much we’ve enjoyed and learned from the ancient Egyptian mummies.  King Tut has toured the world several times and we are all transfixed by him.  I think mummification should be a requirement for all former Presidents after their deaths.  In four thousand years the civilization can learn about our culture and see what our “kings” looked like.

The Mummiform is your personal sarcophagus.  It is designed by artisans to exact specifications.  The Mummiform and “life mask” can be designed to include any belief or symbology you hold dear.  It can be made as simple or as elaborate as you wish.  They will inscribe it for you or inlay it with golf, ceramics, or even jewels.  And you can have a mummiform made for your pet as well.  You can, however, use a traditional burial casket which must be full couch 48oz. bronze or full couch stainless steel.  These can be purchased from Batesville and Wilbert and probably others. Summum™ also has a stainless steel “time capsule” available

The cost of mummification starts at about $67,000.00.  If you’re interested in being permanently preserved then this “final resting place” option absolutely should be planned in advance.  To assist in your Preneed planning, Summum™ has made available necessary documents on their website.
